The course is designed for people who have retired or are about to retire. Emphasis is on learning about problems likely to be encountered on retirement and in the years following retirement. Course participants contribute their knowledge of strategies used by retired people to manage their lives in order to maintain high self-esteem and quality of life. They learn from the findings of research and from each other. They learn about the importance of keeping minds and bodies active. Participants also learn that it is possible to make changes that can improve feelings of well being and enable them to live more satisfying lives despite problems they may encounter. They benefit from meeting and working with the other class members.

The materials are in three forms.

  • This Curriculum Statement describes the principles underlying the course design and how those principles are intended to be applied in practice. This can be accessed online.
  • The Tutor's Guide gives detailed suggestions on how each class session should be run, together with overhead transparency masters and handouts; background reading and sources of further useful information.
  • The CD-ROM contains both of the above, the full text of the report of the Inquiry into Planning for Positive Ageing and several booklets recommended for information or as class handouts.

The Tutor's Guide and the CD-ROM may be ordered free of charge from ARIS, Language Australia, telephone (61 3) 9926 4779.
