It focuses on health problems which place a major burden on the community in terms of illness, disability and death and which have been given priority for public health action by the Victorian and Commonwealth governments. Differences in patterns of illness and injury across the Victorian population and some of the factors underlying those differences have been explored, to enable resources and efforts to be targeted where they are most needed and will produce the greatest gains.
