EmailAssisted Reproductive Treatment Act 2008
The Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 2008 was passed in the Victorian Parliament on 4 December 2008 and came into operation on 1 January 2010. This site outlines the effects and provisions of the Act. The Act is now available online and can be downloaded from the Victorian Legislation and Parliamentary Documents website.
The main purposes of the Act are:
- to regulate the use of assisted reproductive treatment and artificial insemination procedures (other than self-insemination)
- to regulate access to information about treatment procedures carried out under the Act
- to promote research into the incidence, causes and prevention of infertility
- to make provision with respect to surrogacy arrangements
- to establish the Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority
- to provide for the keeping of the Central Register and the Voluntary Register by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages
- to repeal the Infertility Treatment Act 1995
- to amend the Status of Children Act 1974 and the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1996 and other Acts consequent on the enactment of the Act.
