New and Emerging African Language Healthcare Interpreting Orientation Program

The New and Emerging African Language Healthcare Interpreting Orientation Program (HIOP), was jointly developed and conducted by the language service departments at St. Vincent's Health and The Royal Women's Hospital. HIOP was an intensive orientation program which aimed to improve the quality and professional standard of communication that occurs between healthcare professionals and patients via unaccredited interpreters in new and emerging African languages.

The project outlines an innovative model to address: the provision of interpreter training opportunities for unaccredited bilinguals; the quality of interpreting in new and emerging African languages in acute medical settings; and the attainment of appropriate qualifications in the field of interpreting and translating. The report is available for downloading in the document link below.
