Interstate prescriptions for Opioid Replacement Therapy (ORT) – after 1 July 2010
Information and requirements for Victorian prescribers transferring an ORT patient to another state or territory
Following the introduction of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS), it is possible for prescriptions written by Victorian prescribers for Schedule 8 poisons (including methadone or buprenorphine for Opioid Replacement Therapy) to be dispensed in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia, provided interstate requirements are also met.
For instance, some pharmacies interstate will not be able to dispense prescriptions for ORT unless the prescription has been authorised in that state or territory. Refer to the following document for further information.
Prescriptions written by Victorian prescribers for Schedule 8 poisons (including methadone or buprenorphine for Opioid Replacement Therapy) cannot be dispensed in the Northern Territory, Tasmania and Western Australia. These states or territories have legislated to prevent prescriptions for Schedule 8 poisons being valid unless the prescriber is practising in that state or territory. Information for Victorian pharmacists regarding interstate prescriptions for ORT
If a Victorian pharmacy dispenses ORT for a patient on a prescription written by an interstate doctor, the pharmacist should use the following form to notify the Department of Health of their intention once the patient is accepted.
