Food handler training

All food premises that operate in Victoria need to ensure that their food handlers have the skills and knowledge required to keep food safe in the workplace.

This requirement means anyone within the business or community group involved in any activity that involves food, or surfaces likely to come into contact with food, must know how to keep the food safe from contamination.

This information sheet provides important information about the skills and knowledge required by food handlers:

The Department of Health has also developed Do Food Safely, a free on-line learning program than can help improve your business and staff’s knowledge of safe food handling techniques.

Please note that Do Food Safely is not an accredited course. If you wish to gain accreditation in food safety practices, please contact a local Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to find out more information about accredited courses. Details can be found at the National Training Information Service (NTIS) website.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has also developed 'Food Safety: Guidance on skills and knowledge for food businesses - Advice for food businesses on the skills and knowledge requirement of Food Safety Standard 3.2.2'. This guide can be downloaded from the Food Standards Australia New Zealand website.
