Fairer health: case studies on improving health for all

Page content: About the guide | Case studies | Download document

Health inequalities have a fundamentally unfair, undesirable and unproductive impact on individual lives and the community. There has been some action to reduce these inequalities, although this action has only recently been evaluated, and the impact on health equity described. Across the world each year, good practice grows as further evaluations and good practice tools are commissioned.

About the guide

This guide showcases just a few of the many creative and innovative approaches across Victoria to tackling health inequalities. These approaches have been funded by a range of organisations - not all by the Victorian Government. Some programs reduce the disadvantage and discrimination that lead to ill-health and exclusion. Others promote health for all Victorians or focus on the quality, affordability and accessibility of services.

Case studies

Selecting case studies for this guide has emphasised the common critical factors often present in programs that promote health equity. They are:

  • Planning for impact
  • Taking a multi-sector approach
  • Community-owned
  • Rethinking inclusion
  • Connecting to the wider causes of health.

The selected case studies are intended to provide a starting point for thinking further about what action you can take to build health equity and inclusion.

This guide was developed by the Department of Human Services in partnership with VicHealth.
