Recent advice from the Commonwealth Government of a change to the Highly Specialised Drugs Program, effective 1 September 2008, is outlined below.

AMENDED RESTRICTION

Sevalamer Hydrochloride

9620H Tablet 800mg 180 Renagel GZ

Management of hyperphosphataemia in a patient with chronic kidney disease on dialysis whose serum phosphate is not controlled on other products and where:

  1. serum phosphate is greater than 1.6 mmol per L; or
  2. the serum calcium times phosphate product is greater than 4.0 at the commencement of therapy.

Management includes initiation, stabilisation and review of therapy as required.

Changes notified by hospital circular will be updated in the Guidelines on the Commonwealth/State Highly Specialised Drugs Program Guidelines website and the claim form amended.
