Leongatha Hospital Campus Stage 1 – Residential Aged Care - $10 million

$10 million has been provided to rebuild the aged care facility as part of the redevelopment of the Leongatha Hospital. Stage 1 of the redevelopment will include the construction of a new 36-bed aged residential facility to replace the existing outmoded and dysfunctional building, relocation of pathology services into portable buildings, demolition of the existing nursing home and construction of a new associated car park. The initiative will allow essential site infrastructure to be undertaken which will facilitate the next stage of the redevelopment.

Nathalia District Hospital and Aged Care Redevelopment - $18 million

$18 million has been provided to rebuild the Nathalia District Hospital on a greenfield site in Nathalia. A new facility will replace the current building that has very poor building fabric with ongoing problem of white ant damage and related concerns. The facility will include a new 26 bed integrated health service (comprising aged residential and acute beds), primary care, GP clinic and ancillary areas such as laundry and kitchen.

Support for Bush Nursing Hospitals and Small Rural Health Services - $1.7 million ($7.1 million over four years)

The Budget allocates a further $1.7 million in 2007-08 ($7.1 million over four years) to support continuation of infrastructure upgrades at bush nursing hospitals and small rural health services across the State. This funding will enable bush nursing hospitals and centres to provide critical primary health and emergency services to remote rural communities and continue to deliver vital services to these locations.

A New Rural Dental School

The Budget commits $1.5 million in 2007-08 as part of the project to establish a new rural dental school in Bendigo to address the critical shortage of dentists in rural Victoria. The first stage of this project will significantly expand the pre-clinical laboratory at La Trobe University Bendigo Campus to provide facilities for 50 undergraduate dental students commencing in 2008. The second stage of the project will fully establish the new rural dental school and three satellite clinics in Wodonga, Mildura and Melton.

Stawell Health and Community Centre Redevelopment - $20 million

Funding is provided for redevelopment of the former Stawell Technical College ‘Golf Reef Campus’ for community and health services. The new building will include services delivered by Grampians Community Health Centre, allied health, specialist medical services (including a GP medical clinic), primary care services delivered by Stawell Regional Health, and recreation facilities for older persons assisted by Northern Grampians Shire.

Warrnambool Hospital Redevelopment Stage 1 - $16 million

The Budget commits $16 million for redevelopment works at South West Healthcare’s Warrnambool Hospital campus. Stage 1 of the redevelopment will include a new ambulance station and construction of a new extended care unit providing 5 additional mental health beds. This funding will also provide a new kitchen for the hospital and essential engineering infrastructure relocations and upgrades, in preparation for the next stage of the redevelopment.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging – Shepparton and Sunshine - $8.5 million

Two state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines will be installed at Western Health in Sunshine and at Goulburn Valley Health in Shepparton. This will significantly improve access for public patients to this critical diagnostic technology in regional and outer suburban areas of Victoria.

This will increase the number of machines in use in regional Victoria to four and in outer Melbourne to five.

Rural Ambulance Victoria – Station Upgrades - $7.4 million

The Budget provides $7.4 million to upgrade ambulance stations in rural and regional Victoria. Funding will enable construction and refurbishment of rural stations in Geelong, Belmont, Norlane, Wonthaggi, Lismore, Stawell, Daylesford, Warragul, Yea and Lara. Funding will also purchase two additional vehicles to support an additional shift per day in Moe.

Ballarat Hospital Redevelopment - $4.5 million

The Government has committed $4.5 million for redevelopment works at the Ballarat Hospital. The works will include an additional operating theatre, upgrading of the Central Sterile Supply Department, and development of a new medi-hotel to accommodate patients from distant towns that require day-surgery admission as well as improve patient access and patient flow.

Murtoa Community Health Centre Redevelopment - $2.5 million

Funding of $2.5 million has been allocated for the construction of a new building to house the Murtoa Community Health Centre that is currently located in ageing premises.

Barwon Health - Geelong Hospital Masterplan - $2 million

Funding is provided to undertake master planning for expansion of facilities at Geelong Hospital.

Bendigo Health - Bendigo Hospital Planning and Development – $2 million

Funding is allocated for ongoing planning for the Bendigo Health Care Group’s main hospital site that will support the redevelopment of the hospital, including expanded mental health capacity, new wards, and new allied health and outpatient facilities.
