Public Hospitals & Health Services - Capital Projects

Metropolitan Capital Works 2008 / 2009

The 2008-09 State Budget continues the Government’s commitment to providing the infrastructure needed to support the delivery of high quality and accessible services in the health sector.  Funding of $432.8 million is allocated for new health building projects. 


Alfred Centre Stage 2- $17 million
Funding of $17 million is provided for the second stage of the Alfred Centre.  This initiative will create additional clinical space for Bayside to expand the Alfred’s elective surgery centre to include a broader ambulatory care focus. 

Box Hill Hospital- infrastructure upgrade- $8.5 million
The Budget allocates $8.5 million for infrastructure upgrades at the Box Hill Hospital including theatre, electrical and mechanical services works, ensuring the continuing operation of existing hospital facilities and to enable the continued redevelopment of the hospital. 

Casey Hospital- Special Care Nursery- $4.2 million
$4.2 million will be committed to the expansion of the Special Care Nursery (SCN) at Casey Hospital to increase physical capacity to meet projected continuing demand growth resulting from the surge in Victorian births.  Increasing the SCN from six beds to 20 beds will enable Casey Hospital to care for vulnerable preterm and ill neonates from the local community and substantially increase the number of births that can occur at the hospital.

Dandenong Hospital Emergency Department - redevelopment- $25 million
The Budget allocates $25 million for the redevelopment of the emergency department at the Dandenong Hospital, increasing its capacity from 35 to 55 treatment spaces (including a 20 bed short stay unit).  The project also supports improved clinical support services for diagnostic, pharmacy and pathology, and outpatient services at Dandenong Hospital. 

Frankston Hospital maternity service expansion- $5 million
Provision of $5 million in funding will enable Peninsula Health to meet current and future maternity services demand at Frankston Hospital.  The funding will expand capacity for maternity services at Frankston Hospital providing for an additional 300 plus births each year.

Kingston Centre - redevelopment Stage 2- $45 million
Funding of $45 million has been invested in the continued redevelopment of the Kingston Centre.  Stage 2 will establish a 64 bed sub acute ward, new facilities for ambulatory services (delivering an additional 32,000 occasions of service), a new hydrotherapy pool and critical infrastructure on the Kingston Centre site. 

Melton - new dental chairs- $4.9 million
Funding of $4.9 million will be provided to establish new dental chairs in Melton for the training of student dentists completing their studies at the La Trobe’s University Bendigo campus.  This will provide extra public dental services to people living in the western suburbs. 

Metropolitan Ambulance Service- station upgrades- $2.1million
The Budget allocates $2.1 million to meet the growth in demand for metropolitan ambulance services.  Funds are provided for establishment of peak period units at Abbotsford, Coburg, Ivanhoe and Frankston, involving the purchase of additional vehicles, leasing and fit- out costs.  In addition, funding will allow refurbishment of stations at Hastings, Pakenham and Sunbury. 

Monash Medical Centre Clayton- pregnancy assessment unit- $4.8 million
$4.8 million will be allocated for a new Southern Health Pregnancy Assessment Unit to be located at Monash Medical Centre Clayton.  The Pregnancy Assessment Unit will provide a new model of care for antenatal management incorporating streamlined high level antenatal care in a purpose build facility and increasing functional capacity in postnatal wards and birthing suites.  The establishment of the Southern Health Pregnancy Assessment Unit will enable Monash Medical Centre Clayton to accommodate and additional 200 plus births each year. 

Ashwood - MonashLink Community Health Service - $1.3 million
Funding of $1.3 million is provided for the relocation of clinical services from the existing facility in Ashwood to a new site off Warrigal Road.  The existing facility is poorly located and cannot be expanded for clinical service space due to the lack of disability access.  This initiative complements the Government’s 2006 election commitment to build new MonashLink facilities at Oakleigh and Glen Waverley.  

Oakleigh and Glen Waverley - MonashLink Community Health Service - $1 million
$1 million will be allocated to support planning and development of purpose built facilities for MonashLink Community Health Service (MLCHS) in Oakleigh and Glen Waverley. 

Sunraysia and Wodonga- New rural dental chairs - $8.1 million
Funding of $8.1 million is provided to expand dental chair capacity in Mildura and Wodonga to respond to increasing demand for dental services and provide training of dentists graduating from the La Trobe University Bendigo campus.  A ten chair clinic will be established in Wodonga and an eight chair clinic in Mildura.

Northern Hospital- maternity expansion- $2.5 million
Funding of $2.5 million is allocated to expand maternity bed capacity at Northern Hospital by a further six beds (single bed rooms) providing capacity for an additional 500 births.  This expanded capacity will support the opportunity for more women in the outer northern suburbs to deliver their babies closer to home.

Olivia Newton John Cancer Centre- $25 million
$25 million will be contributed to the development of the Olivia Newton John Cancer Centre to bring together all facets of cancer care, research and training at the Austin Hospital.  It will deliver a wide range of services including new chemotherapy, radiotherapy, specialist outpatient and consulting services and the southern hemisphere’s first cancer Wellness Centre to cater for the psycho- social, spiritual and emotional needs of patients with cancer.

Parkville Comprehensive Cancer Centre- planning funding- $5 million
Funding of $5 million is provided for the planning of a new Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Parkville, the proposal will focus on the former Dental Hospital site adjacent to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. 

Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital- redevelopment- $2 million
The planned redevelopment of the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital is designed to create a modern facility providing specialist eye and ear, nose and throat services and associated research.  The 2008- 09 Budget has committed $2 million to support planning and design for new and refurbished facilities. 

Sunbury Day Hospital- $14 million
Funding of $14 million will be provided to develop a new Day Hospital in Sunbury to deliver treatment for a range of health conditions that require specialist medical care but do not require overnight stay in hospital.  The Sunbury Day Hospital will provide residents in Sunbury and the surrounding communities with specialist medical care, including diagnostic, pathology and rehabilitation, bringing these services close to where people live.  The Day Hospital will also perform day minor medical and surgical procedures, dialysis and chemotherapy, making it easier for people to get local treatment.  Together with the $1 million allocated in the 2007- 08 Budget for planning, this completes the Government’s 2006 election commitment of $15 million. 

Sunshine Hospital- expansion and redevelopment- $73.5 million
The Budget allocates $73.5 million to the second stage of the Sunshine Hospital Redevelopment Project.  This will provide a radiotherapy facility with four bunkers and a new teaching, training and research facility. The radiotherapy service will be the first public service located in the western suburbs and will significantly improve access to this important service for cancer treatment.  The new teaching, training and research facility will include the University of Melbourne and Victoria University, and will support the expansion of the clinical workforce. 
 
Werribee Mercy Hospital – expansion Stage 1 - $14 million
 The Budget allocates $14 million to the Werribee Mercy Hospital Expansion Stage 1 to address the identified service demand for maternity services. The funding will deliver eight additional obstetric beds and four additional special care nursery costs.  This will enable significant expansion of maternity services at this hospital and provide improved access for the rapidly growing community in the outer south western suburbs.  The expanded maternity service will be augmented by the expansion of the Special Care Nursery to reduce the need to transfer newborn babies to other sites.
