Protocol between Victorian Police and the Department of Human Services Mental Health Branch - July 2004

Protocol between Victoria Police and the Department of Human Services Mental Health Branch (PDF file 427KB)

A number of significant changes to both police services and public mental health services have occurred since the protocol was developed in 1995.

The protocol aims to:

  • Establish clear guidelines for police and mental health services staff on handling situations where either agency has requested assistance from the other,
  • Promote the best possible standard of care to the mentally ill person in situations which involve both police and mental health services staff, and
  • Outline agreed procedures for management of psychiatric crises and high risk situations involving people who have, or are believed to have a mental illness.
