Box Hill Hospital redevelopment work commences
Works have commenced on the $407.5 million redevelopment of the Box Hill Hospital.
The state-of-the-art health precinct will be the major referral centre for Melbourne's east. It will also meet the growing demand for services in Melbourne's east and will provide more than 100 extra beds, enabling about 7000 additional patients to be treated at Box Hill Hospital each year.
This exciting redevelopment will include a new, larger emergency department with 19 extra cubicles, a new intensive care unit, more inpatient wards, six new operating theatres and four refurbished theatres as well as a dedicated precinct for children’s and women’s health services.
Other new facilities include:
- new sub acute beds
- three new endoscopy/procedure laboratories
- a new cardiology ward
- cardiology diagnostics and cardiac catheter laboratories
- a new oncology ward
Demolition of the hospital's engineering workshops started this month and the site is being cleared to accommodate the new building that will be located to the west of the existing hospital.
The refurbishment of the existing hospital will include a dedicated elective surgery service for patients requiring non-complex elective procedures, expanded outpatient services and refurbished inpatient wards.
The redevelopment will enable the hospital to provide better care and services for patients and a better place to work and learn for staff.
The Box Hill hospital redevelopment is expected to be completed by 2015.
