Government releases landmark health plan

3 May 2011
The Victorian Government’s plan for the future development of the state’s health system was released today.
The Health Priorities Framework 2012-22: Metropolitan Health Plan outlines seven new priority areas including:
- Developing a system that is responsive to people’s needs;
- Improving every Victorian’s health status and experiences;
- Expanding service, workforce and system capacity;
- Increasing the system’s financial sustainability and productivity;
- Implementing continuous improvements and innovations;
- Increasing accountability and transparency; and
- Utilising e-health and communications technology
The Health Priorities Framework 2012-22 will provide a future plan for metropolitan Melbourne, and more broadly, for Victoria, taking proper account of population and ageing demographics.
The plan will be supported by similar blueprints for rural and regional Victoria and our health system’s capital requirements, including workforce.
The blueprints will guide the development of the Victorian health system both public and private, and improvement of the system towards 2022.
Health Minister, David Davis, said the Victorian health system has served our community well over many decades, but it was now straining to meet current needs.
“At present, it is not designed to handle the rise of chronic and complex conditions, nor to fill the growing need to provide individuals with access to information about their health and healthcare,” Mr Davis said.
“We are inviting feedback on the Health Priorities Framework 2012-2022: Metropolitan Health Plan and the Metropolitan Health Services Technical Paper.”
A series of open meeting and consultation sessions will be held during May-June 2011.
