Responding to Victoria's floods

24 January 2011
The recent floods have had a devastating affect on communities, homes and lives.
The Department of Health and Department of Human Services are working with councils and the Red Cross to ensure people have food, shelter, counselling and immediate financial assistance at relief and recovery centres.
As this emergency response shifts to the recovery stage for some communities, our focus will be to provide longer-term personal support, advice and assistance. This will include making sure people have temporary accommodation if they can’t return to their homes, or if they can return to their homes, ensuring they are safe and understand the health risks after a flood and where to go for support.
Support available
Flood affected people are being urged to visit a relief recovery centre, contact their council or visit www.dhs.vic.gov.au where comprehensive information about cleaning up after the floods is available. People can also contact the Flood Information Line on 1300 842 737.
Emergency grants of up to $1067 per household are available to help people meet the immediate basic needs for clothing, food, personal items and shelter.
People who are experiencing an emotional crisis, in connection with the floods or otherwise, can call Lifeline's 24-hour hotline on 13 11 14. Lifeline’s telephone service offers confidential support and advice to help in dealing with stress and personal challenges.
Donating to the Flood Appeal

Funds raised will be used to support individuals, families and communities in areas affected by the 2011 Victorian floods. Visit the Victorian Floods Appeal website for further information.
