Child nutrition

The Health Development Section has targeted families with young children as a priority in promoting healthy eating in part by developing resources for families and for professionals.

The Community Care Division of the Department of Human Services includes the Maternal and Child Health Service. This site details services and resources available to all Victorian families with children 0 to 6 years seeking advice on parenting, nutrition, child development and behaviour.

  • Child nutrition topics
    This section provides detailed information for health professionals as well as a range of nutrition tip sheets which can be downloaded and provided to parents. The tip sheets provide general nutrition information for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and children at school, in addition to common nutrition related issues such as iron deficiency, overweight and vegetarian diets for children.

  • What's There to Eat?
    A resource for early childhood service providers about nutrition and how to encourage healthy eating in families.

  • Fruit + Veg program
    Information and resources aimed at increasing awareness of the need for primary school aged children to eat more fruit and vegetables.

  • Further resources
    Including Victorian breastfeeding guidelines, improving breastfeeding rates,and Food service in childcare centres.

National Child Nutrition Program

The Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing (DHAC) has funded nutrition projects throughout Australia under the National Child Nutrition Program. Many of these projects are delivered through collaborative partnerships with local organisations to develop innovative strategies which improve the nutrition of pregnant women and children.
