Welcome

The Department of Human Services (DHS) initiated a review of patient food preparation and distribution in Metropolitan Health Services in 2003. The review was designed to provide a strategic direction for DHS in relation to patient and aged care client meal production, plating and delivery across Metropolitan Melbourne.

The strategic intent for the food services review was to establish a best practice food services system throughout the Metropolitan Health Services providing over 10 million meals per annum designed to:

  • Deliver a high value and consistent meal quality to patients
  • Ensure continuity of food service delivery to meet demand, satisfy food safety and mitigate risk
  • Utilise efficient and effective facilities that satisfy acceptable occupational health and safety standards
  • Enhance the operational efficiency of food production and distribution systems
