Consumer leadership and education

Background

In December 2009 the VQC Health Literacy working group engaged the Health Issues Centre (HIC) to design and pilot accredited training courses targeted at consumers (beginner to experienced board member) and health service staff working with consumers. The pilot and project is now complete.

Project Overview

The courses were designed to:

  • more specifically meet the needs of health consumers with varying experience levels – from beginner to experienced board member and health service staff members;
  • be accredited by the Victorian Registration and Qualification Authority (VRQA); and
  • upon completion of the pilot, be based on a sustainable, fee for service model.
The VQC’s Health Literacy working group had oversight of all stages of the project and provided feedback to HIC at appropriate points throughout. The key milestones in the process were:
  • Initial Literature review
  • Forming of a project reference committee
  • Course design
  • Submission to the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority for accreditation
  • Piloting of all three courses
  • Evaluation and subsequent amendments
The courses developed and now available via the Health Issues Centre are:
  • Engage as a consumer in a health care service (VU20263)
  • Course in Consumer Leadership (22095VIC)
  • Vocational Graduate Certificate in Consumer Engagement (22092VIC)
For further information on the courses and their availability contact Tere Dawson on (03) 9479 5827.

Where it fits in the strategic plan?

The consumer leadership education program project falls under the responsibility of the Health Literacy Working group and is directly linked to strategic goal 2 – improving the patient journey.
