Training Resources for Doctors

The Next Steps: Having Conversations on Life and Death project

Improving the clinical communication skills of doctors in advance care planning and end-of-life care discussions

Good clinical communication skills are essential for the appropriate and effective management and care of patients. Discussions on advance care planning and end-of-life care (EoLC) pose challenges for many doctors, as they can be difficult to initiate and sensitive to conduct. The literature supports development of strategies to enhance the communication skills of doctors to effectively initiate and engage in conversations with patients and their families/carers about advance care planning and EoLC.

The Next Steps: Having Conversations on Life and Death education and training package

The Next Steps: Having Conversations on Life and Death education and training package has been developed on evidence-based best practice in medical education, and contains a suite of resources for either facilitator-led or independent learning.

About the project

Advance care planning has been defined as a "process of planning for future health and personal care whereby the person's values, beliefs and preferences are made known so that they can guide decision making at a future time when that person cannot make or communicate his or her decisions" (CTEPC, Sept 2011).

In November 2010, the Victorian Quality Council (VQC) commissioned a project to develop and evaluate an education and training package for doctors regarding advance care planning and end-of-life care (EoLC). This project, The Next Steps: Having Conversations on Life and Death, aims to improve the clinical communication skills, knowledge and confidence of doctors in training and general practitioners to initiate effective advance care planning and EoLC discussions with patients and their families/carers.

Any enquires about The Next Steps education and training package should be directed to Zenaida Magtoto, Project Officer, VQC Secretariat and Knowledge Management Unit at zenaida.magtoto@health.vic.gov.au or telephone on 9096 1383.
