In August 2021, the Victorian government launched the Healthy Choices policy directive for Victorian public health services. The goal of this directive is to make sure that all public health services in Victoria offer and promote healthier food and drink options.
This applies to in-house managed retail food outlets, all vending machines, catering and food and drink bought by staff from patient or resident menus.
It applies to all public health services sites and facilities, including hospitals, residential aged care and integrated Community Health Services.
Congratulations to the overwhelming majority of services who continue to report on their progress and meet targets.
This means staff and visitors have access to healthier food and drinks. Health services will continue to report annually, a process supported by the Healthy Eating Advisory Service (HEAS).
HEAS will provide this information to the Department of Health. Your support as leaders is crucial and essential in monitoring your food environment and collaborating with your teams to keep up the good work.
Health promotion officers, dietitians, food service staff and managers - your support and advocacy has been so important in making progress so far and your ongoing dedication will make sure this work is sustained.
Together we have the opportunity to increase healthier options on offer to your staff and visitors and promote the health and well-being of everyone who uses your services.
