Supervision and delegation framework for allied health assistants and the support workforce in disability

Greater utilisation of the allied health assistant (AHA) workforce and more effective use of disability and patient care workers will increase allied health workforce capacity and sustainability in the disability sector; and improve the system’s capacity to meet the community’s needs into the future.

While the role of the AHA is not new, there are significant opportunities to expand the roles and use of AHAs in settings such as disability care. There are also significant opportunities for disability workers and community care workers to work closely with allied health professionals and provide appropriate clinical care under the supervision and delegation of an allied health professional.

The Supervision and delegation framework for allied health assistants and the support workforce in disability (the framework) is a governance tool that provides a person-centred approach to support and achieve client goals. The framework aims to improve communication between the person with a disability, their carer or family and their support team, and improve understanding of allied health professionals and the support workforce in providing allied health services.
