Radiation shielding assessment standard

The Radiation Act 2005 (Victoria) (the Act) makes it an offence for a person who uses a radiation source or conducts a radiation practice to cause another person to receive a radiation dose above the prescribed limits.

Shielding assessments are used to design and evaluate radiation premises to ensure the premises are fit for purpose and that applicable dose limits and constraints are unlikely to be exceeded. They apply to both new and existing premises and are key to ensuring radiation protection and supporting compliance.

Most management licence applications must include a shielding assessment for review by the Department. Licence conditions may also require shielding assessments and documentation to be maintained, implemented and kept current.

This document sets out the minimum standard for conducting and reporting shielding assessments in Victoria. It does not limit the scope of an assessment. Where necessary, assessors must consider additional factors and may need to exceed the requirements of this standard.
