The Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner, often referred to as OVIC, is an independent oversight body that regulates the Victorian public sector's collection, use and disclosure of personal information. Personal information is information about an individual who is identified or whose identity is reasonably ascertainable.

OVIC has various functions under the Victorian Freedom of Information Act 1982 and the Victorian Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014.

The Freedom of Information Act 1982 gives OVIC the authority to review decisions, handle complaints, provide advice and education, and monitor compliance with the professional standards related to processing Freedom of Information requests.

The Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014, gives OVIC the responsibility to promote awareness and understanding of the Information Privacy Principles. OVIC also receives notifications on complaints and data breaches, conducts audits and research, and develops and enforces the Protective Data Security Standards for information security under this Act.
