The 2024 Mental health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) Workforce Personnel Survey is now open.

The Department of Health invites individual members of the mental health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) workforce – whether in a public, community, or private setting – to take part and provide feedback on their experience working in the sector.

Hearing directly from the mental health and AOD workforce will inform what is needed to attract, train, support and retain a workforce for Victoria’s transforming mental health and wellbeing system.

Participation in the survey is voluntary and all responses will be deidentified.

The Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System made it clear that the way workforce data is collected needs improvement so it can be used to guide system transformation.

This survey supports long-term, strategic workforce planning to better support integration with the community mental health and AOD sectors.

In 2021, the department conducted the first annual mental health workforce personnel survey which was profiled in Victoria’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Workforce Strategy 2021-24External Link and supported the development of the Workforce Capability Framework. The personnel survey also provides important information shared with the Mental Health Workforce Wellbeing Committee to identify wellbeing needs and priorities of the workforce.

Data collected from personnel survey informs the Department’s workforce planning including mapping supply and demand, workforce distribution and response to emerging needs. Workforce data has also contributed to identifying funding priorities and investments.
