Key messages
- The Department supports the use of simulation-based education and training to increase clinical training capacity, quality and efficiency.
- Victoria’s Health Workforce Information Portal, Knowledge Bank, has a map of Victorian healthcare and education providers with simulation facilities and simulation-based clinical skills centres.
The Department of Health and Human Services supports the use of simulation-based education and training to increase clinical training capacity, quality and efficiency, and to influence the adoption of new and innovative training techniques. The Department supports Victorian stakeholders by:
- helping to build networks and individuals with a common interest in simulation together
- identifying needs, opportunities, duplication and gaps for simulation in Victoria
- mapping assets, expertise and resources to inform current and potential simulation-based education and training capacity
- developing resources to support the sustainability of simulation in Victoria

Simulation online learning packages
Australian Centre for Health | Online modules designed for professional-entry students Links theoretical learning directly to simulation-based activities Topics include:
|
Cultural Respect Encompassing Simulation Training | Online resources for health professional educators and tutors to deliver cultural sensitivity training using simulation techniques Aims to improve cultural sensitivity and communication training for medical, nursing, physiotherapy, social work and paramedic students Students and practitioners can access modules and case scenarios |
Free online modules for simulation educators and technicians | |
Temporal Bone Dissection | Beginning with the online theory component, the student then moves onto consolidating their knowledge with a virtual reality simulator course, and then finally has the opportunity to practise their newly acquired skills using an artificial temporal bone. For the virtual reality part, they receive autofeedback in real time, from supervisors who will be guiding them, and can say, for example, ‘Be careful, you are getting very close to the facial nerve'. |
TOE Cardiac Ultrasound Simulation , directed by the Ultrasound Education , University of Melbourne | The course has been designed to use the CAE Vimedix Ultrasound Simulators to reinforce clinical simulator case studies. The participant will learn practical skills in focused transesophageal echocardiography (TOE), also known as focused cardiac ultrasound (FCU) and additional learning that outlines both normal and pathology cases relevant to anaesthesia, critical care, emergency medicine, surgery and internal medicine. |
TTE Cardiac Ultrasound Simulation , directed by the Ultrasound Education , University of Melbourne | The course has been designed to use the CAE Vimedix Ultrasound Simulators to reinforce clinical simulator case studies. The participant will learn practical skills in focused transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), also known as focused cardiac ultrasound (FCU) and additional learning that outlines both normal and pathology cases relevant to anaesthesia, critical care, emergency medicine, surgery and internal medicine. |
Simulated Patient Network | 13 two-hour online modules and text resources for health professional educators and simulated patient program managers Supports the recruitment, training and quality assurance of simulated patients |

Simulation facilities
Knowledge has a map of Victorian healthcare and education providers with simulation facilities and simulation-based clinical skills centres. These facilities and centres offer training to students and staff to enhance their clinical skills and knowledge.
If you would like your simulation facility or centre to be included on the simulation centres map, please contact the department.
Simulation resources
Knowledge has a range of simulation resources and includes materials developed by funded projects. Search by keyword (for example, ‘scenario’) or just browse the Resource Directory.
