Child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) work with a young person until they need less intensive support.

The criteria for determining the end of CAMHS involvement with a young person or their family are usually established on entry to the service.

A young person will be discharged when:

problems are resolved
problems are resolved to the extent that the young person’s needs can be effectively met by other services
an assessment has been undertaken and the referrer, family and others involved are provided with feedback and advice about ongoing management
the young person or family requests discharge and there are no grounds for compulsory treatment under the Mental Health Act 2014.

Discharge plans are made in consultation with the young person, their family and/or carers, and others involved in ongoing management.
